THE HOP & VINE IN HULL IS NAMED YORKSHIRE CIDER PUB OF THE YEAR 2010

The Hop & Vine in Kingston upon Hull is celebrating the news of its latest accolade. It has been named ‘Yorkshire Cider Pub of the Year 2010’ by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

The Hop & Vine is situated in the basement of premises on Albion Street and the business is owned and run by Stewart Campbell and Janet Rowan. They have always supported real cider and perry and provide an interesting choice of three regularly changing ciders (or two ciders and a perry) that are obtained from cider producers throughout England and Wales.

The pub was one of a number that were nominated for the title by CAMRA members throughout Yorkshire. They were then all visited and judged by retiring Yorkshire Regional Cider Co-ordinator, Eric Hirons-Smith, who made his decision after carefully considering the Quality, Temperature and Price of the ciders and perries available. Also considered were aspects of the pub itself: Service & Welcome, Community Focus, Atmosphere, Campaigning and Style/Décor. David Litten, CAMRA’s new Yorkshire Regional Cider Co-ordinator said, “This is a worthy reward to the Hop & Vine following last year’s success of being runner up. The pub champions small producers from far and wide, having selected and sold over 154 different ciders / perries from over 60 farms since opening in November 2006.”

The members of the local CAMRA Branch are delighted that a pub in their area has been selected for this prestigious honour and we will be celebrating with the presentation of a framed certificate by Eric on the afternoon of Sunday 11th July 2010 at around 4pm. And, of course, a few celebratory drinks!

The Rat & Ratchet in Huddersfield was the worthy runner up. For many years it has been a haven for cider and perry and current licensee, Sam Birkhead continues the tradition by offering at least five ciders and or perries at any one time and by holding an annual cider festival in May.
