The Plough Inn in Hollym has been named ‘East Yorkshire Village Pub of the Year 2010’ by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) – Hull & East Yorkshire Branch.
Six pubs were nominated for the prestigious title, and a panel of judges then individually visited each nomination and scored them against strict criteria: Quality of Real Ale, Community Focus, Atmosphere, Campaigning, Style/Decor, Service and Welcome, and Value for Money. For the pub to be eligible for the competition the licensee had to be present since the 1st January 2010.
The Plough Inn is owned by a family partnership of Steve and Sue Martine and their daughter and her husband, Rachelle and Darren Maynard. The family purchased the pub in July 2005 after moving north from London.
The pub is featured in the new CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2011 and described as: “A family-run free house that is 200-years-old, of wattle and daub construction, that has undergone considerable refurbishment. Primarily a local’s pub, it is a haven for discerning holidaymakers in summer. Part of the pub dates from the 16th century, while photographs in the bar show its role during WWll as an ARP station. The room on the right doubles as a dining room.”
The Crooked Billet in Ryehill was runner-up in the competition. The pub is owned by the Marston’s Pub Company (Burton upon Trent) and the licensee is John Camplin, who runs the pub with his son.
It is described in the new CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2011 as: “At the heart of the community, this 16th-century coaching inn has stone floors, upholstered bench seats and a rear dining area. A warm welcome is guaranteed in the colder months, with a real fire next to the side entrance door. Four handpumps offer a range of beers from the Marston’s portfolio; Banks’s Bitter, Jennings Cumberland and two others.”
Branch Chairman, Alan Canvess, said “The Plough Inn was the winner of the 2008 and 2009 competition and a runner up in the 2007 competition, so the owners and their staff have shown a tremendous consistency of high standards over the last four years. The Crooked Billet was a very worthy runner up and recognition of John’s efforts”. Alan will present framed certificates to the licensees of both pubs during a ‘Presentation Trip’ on the evening of Saturday 5th February.
The other pubs nominated for the competition were the Station Inn in Patrington, King William IV in Cottingham, Beech Tree in Kirk Ella and the Wellington Inn in Lund.
