ADELPHI'S REAL ALE HONOUR
Issued April 29th 2010.
ONE of Hull's best- loved music venues has been recognised for its commitment to real ale.
Paul Jackson, owner of the Adelphi Club in De Grey Street, west Hull, received a Committed To Cask Award 2010 from the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) group for his "continuing commitment to quality real ale".
The legendary venue, which has hosted performances by stars including Jarvis Cocker, Oasis and Radiohead, recently celebrated its 25th birthday and has offered a range of real ales, such as Oakham and White Dwarf, throughout this time.
Mr Jackson said: "Decent real ale is actually something I saw as being part of the Adelphi before I even started it.
"I did actually talk to some breweries like Batemans before starting."
For the past two years Mr Jackson has had more freedom to choose the ales on offer at the club after going independent of any brewers.
He said: "We're getting quite good at buying the better stuff now.
"When you're tied to a brewery you are usually tied to the more sterile corporate beers."
The Committed To Cask Awards recognise licensees in Hull and the East Riding that stock quality real ales despite increasing pressure to move towards the more easily stored, mass-produced nitro-keg beers.
They also reward the art of "cellarmanship" in preparing and maintaining the real ale in good condition.
Mr Jackson was thrilled to receive the award from Camra branch chairman Alan Canvess earlier this week.
Mr Jackson said: "I think of myself primarily as a music person and it's quite a humbling experience to get something like this.
"I was completely shocked when all these guys turned up to give the award."
The Adelphi buys from a number of local breweries including the Great Newsome Frothingham Best and Moorlands Yorkshire Cyder from North Newbald.
The Adelphi was nominated for the award by Camra member Stewart Campbell who drinks at the club "from time to time".
Mr Campbell said: "It's always a pleasure to go to a club and music venue knowing you are going to get a decent pint of real ale."
